Engine Codes

The Engine Code starts with M6401, identifying the standard 3.6L engine, the digits following are the serial number of the engine.

Option Codes

Your factory-fitted Option codes are on the sticker in your Guarantee and Maintenance handbook page 4, item 5.   You can type these codes into Charlie Kindel's Option Decoder, or take a look at Adrian Streather's pretty full Option List.  And Laseric has them in French.

Parts Charts and Other Specification Data

Detailed Parts Charts can be found at Road & Race Inc.  Access is free.

For around $20 a year ALLDATA provides you with web access to parts charts, specifications, technical service bulletins, repair info and more for your subscribed model of Porsche.  Well worth it if you are planning any DIY.

Warning on Porsche Parts and Workshop Manual CDs.  You will see various copies of 'PET' parts CDs and Workshop Manuals CDs for sale on eBay and message boards for around $50 from time-to-time.  They are pirated copies (often copies of copies) of a proprietary Porsche parts program for their dealers or they are scans of Porsche's paper manuals of varied quality.  Please stay clear, they are illegal copies and breach Porsche's copyright.  Porsche has never sold copies of any CD based documentation.  You can obtain proper versions of 964 manuals on paper and microfiche.  In the UK try Gmund Books but expect to pay over £400.

Manuals

Pirated copies of Porsche 964 manuals are around on CD and are not recomended.  Adrian Streather's book will address many technical procedures when in comes out.  In the meantime Bentley have published a technical data manual.  It comes with mixed reviews in the 964 community.  Here is Bentley's own description.

"The Porsche Carrera 964: 1989 – 1994 Technical Data–Without Guesswork™ is an invaluable technical reference source for the Carrera 964. Fluid capacities, tightening torques, nominal values, wear limits, system illustrations, and electrical component locations are a few of the technical highlights you’ll find in this handy sized format. This sturdy wire-bound 8½" by 5¾" handbook is optimized for the toolbox, the workbench, and the shop environment. Quick access and easy navigation to hundreds of illustrations, tables and photographs make this a must-have for service professionals and Porsche 964 owners alike."
