John's 964 Book List

Below is a list of Porsche books on my bookshelf and on my Wish List. The books are all recommended reading by Porsche enthusiasts. If you have a favourite book that is not on the list then do email me the details and a brief review and I will include it. Reviews by Adrian Streather (AS) and Melvin Spear (MS).

This book may look like a workshop manual; but it’s not. The somewhat lengthy title says it all – it’s an enthusiasts’ companion for anyone with a 964-model 911. And the author, Adrian Streather, is surely the biggest 964 enthusiast out there. Well-known for his invaluable help on 964 message boards, Adrian has spent years researching and writing this massive 638-page book.

It’s no exaggeration to say the book includes pretty much everything an owner would ever need to know about the 964. Within its pages are sections explaining how all the car’s systems work, plus information on routine servicing, troubleshooting, repairing and upgrading.

Unlike a workshop manual, Adrian’s book doesn’t go into great detail on complex operations, such as an engine or transmission rebuild, but instead concentrates on tasks that an owner is likely to undertake themselves, and Adrian draws on his personal experience of working on his own 964.

It’s rare to find such a practical book written for enthusiasts by an enthusiast. And even rarer to find such a detailed and useful book on such a specific model.

Porsche 911 Forever Young	Porsche 911 Forever Young Tobias Aichele, Peter Albrecht, Ferry Porsche	My bible. Coffee table size books on the history of the 911. Full development model by model with chassis numbers. An inside look at many facets of the design. Subjects include Engine Development, Porsche's Safety Consciousness; All-Wheel Drive; Road testing the 993 prototype, development of the Fuchs Alloy Wheel - MS	Porsche 911 Forever Young
	Porsche 911 Performance Handbook Bruce Anderson	Bruce is renowned for for giving the 964 bad press, however this book is considered to be the ultimate 911 hop-up guide.
	Without Guesswork: Porsche Carrera 89-94 Technician's Handbook Bentley Publishers	A useful reference book primarily aimed at the US versions of the 964. Some data is applicable to the ROW versions but care needs to be taken when using this data. RHD versions not covered. Some important systems not adequately covered. Good supply of illustrations. 	Porsche 911 Gold Portfolio 1990-1997 (Gold Portfolio Series) R.M. Clarke (Editor)	A useful collection of scanned magazine articles on 911 models years 1990to 1997 all in one book. Most are American but there are some English articles as well. One thing you learn from this book is that performance tests carried out by various magazines and test drivers creates many different results. - AS
	Porsche 911 Story Paul Frere	If you can get around the figures, a truly great book that seems to explain the 911 with algebra…..Sixth edition out now. - MS
	Buying and Selling Porsches: An Illustrated Guide for Private Buyers and Sellers Chris Mellor (Editor)	A great read, even if you aren't buying or selling Porsches. Lots of useful background info again. Learnt a lot from this one! It's not often I read a non-fiction book from cover to cover -I did with this one! - MS	Not Available in USA
	Original Porsche 911: The Restorer's Guide to All Production Models 1963-96, Including Turbo (Original) Peter Morgan, John Colley (Photographer)	A useful book for 911 owners to have for general reference purposes. Excellent photographs. General descriptions because it is hard to cover 1963 to 1997 model years in just 144 pages.- AS
	Original Porsche 924 / 944 / 968 Peter Morgan	A good book for 924/944 and 968 owners. Excellent photographs and some very good information on these somewhat literary ignored Porsche models. - AS
	Porsche 911 Red Book 1965-1999 Patrick Paternie	A very useful little data book covering the 911 from 1963 to 1999. Excellent reference material and a recommended purchase. - AS
	Bosch Fuel Injection and Engine Management: Part No. GFIB (Technical (Including Tuning and Modifying)) Charles Probst	If any owner wishes to learn what is behind the fuel injection systems of their own type of automobile, not just Porsches, this is the book to have. Please understand that it is a technical reference book not light reading material. - AS
	Buying, Driving, and Enjoying the Porsche 356 (Ownership Series) James E. Schrager	Whilst not a 911 book this excellent little package provides a lot of information and advice which can be applied to early model 911 ownership. It is also a good idea for all Porsche owners to learn the history of the products. This book is highly recommended. - AS
